The Color Blue:
Blue Remains a Staple in Automotive Color Palette.
Throughout history color has played an extremely important part in communication and psychology. One of the three primary colors, blue has always been a popular color. The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is considered to be peaceful and tranquil and is purported to cause the body to produce calming chemicals.
Over time, blue has taken on a multitude of symbolic connotations, which have taken root in our thought processes. "True blue" indicates someone loyal and faithful; "blue ribbon" is the top prize; "blueblood" designates a person of noble birth or royalty; "the bluebird of happiness" is a harbinger of good things to come.
In the automotive industry, blue was one of the first colors to appear on automobiles in the early 1920's. The blues of those early automobiles are a far cry from the blues of today. Developments in product technology and the makeup of pigments over the years have made available a wide range of hues and shades in the blue family.
PPG Color Stylists tell us that modern innovations in product design signal a resurgence of blue in the automotive palette. Designers are indicating that new shades of intense, bright and high-impact hues will emerge for high-performance vehicles. Light silvery fluid blues, smoky lilacs and deep, exotic effects are anticipated in the luxury vehicle segment. More conservative looks are predicted to be comprised of several water shades that are infused with a fresh green tint.
The PPG Global Design and Color Marketing Team is now showing automakers more than 170 innovative colors for consideration for the 2007-2009 model years. For more than 20 years, PPG has been tracking and presenting color creations and the latest technical information to automakers worldwide. According to PPG Global Design and Color Marketing, "North American consumers are moving away from more traditional shades and moving toward brighter and more dynamic color choices. The next generation of automotive colors, including the "new blues", reflects a bright and vibrant outlook toward the future".
