The Color Red:

The Color Of Power

Considered the most emotionally intense color, studies show that red can increase the rate of respiration and raise blood pressure. The color of power, wearing red coats was the exclusive right of the nobility in medieval times and the red robes of kings, cardinals, judges and executioners announced their power over life and death. Other associations with the color red include love, energy, lust, courage, caution, rage, leadership and war.

Red is the color of heat and fire. Red is the color of fire alarm boxes, fire extinguishers and emergency vehicles. Being the color of blood, the phrase "red-blooded" describes someone who is robust, or virile. The expression "seeing red" indicates anger and stems not only from the stimulus of the color, but from the natural flush of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.

In feng shui, red is associated with fire. It can help you feel more confident, powerful and strong, but too much of it can lead to agitation.

In marketing and advertising the color red is used to get attention and to get people to take action. Red suggests speed combined with confidence and is often associated with risk and danger. Therefore, red has often been the choice of automotive manufacturers for sport and racing vehicles. For example, red is the traditional color of racecars sponsored by Italian companies.

The current trend in reds in the automotive palette is towards warm, dark and glowing shades inspired by wood stained products used in residential and commercial interiors. Environments that use earthen, natural redwoods provide a protective, cozy feeling that adapts well to the automotive palette. Look for new introductions of very stable, classic shades that reference deep cranberry and wine.

Although only 6.9 percent of the vehicles manufactured worldwide wore the color red, it remains a constant in the automotive palette. As red remains the symbol of power, speed and confidence, bright impact reds will continue to be popular for sport and racing vehicles.
